ENGR. M. DAVID-WEST (SNR)

Born on July 13, 1949 to the noble, erudite and amiable David-West family of Buguma, Rivers State, he had an early childhood that was focused and as a child of good pedigree, his approach to life was robust and responsive.

He graduated with honours in Civil Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1977 and discharged his National Youth Service under the Ondo State Housing Co-operation, Akure, Ondo State. He later joined the services of Etteh Aro and Partners in 1978. Here, he faithfully served as Pupil Engineer, rising to the peak of the career as partner in 1986 having been appointed Resident Engineer/Manager earlier, to lead the Port Harcourt Branch of the firm in 1980.

Mayne is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (FNIStructE), Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (FNICE), Member of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers (MIABSE), Member of the International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research (MIAHR), and Member of the Nigerian Institute of Highway Engineers (MNIHE). He is on the Register of Council for the Regulation of Engineering (COREN). Among the several awards received are “NICE Award of Professional Excellence in recognition of exceptional accomplishments as a Civil Engineer, 2015” and “NICE Distinguished Award for Commitment to Professional Excellence in Civil Engineering Practice in Nigeria, 2011”.

In 1987, Mayne became a Principal of Pearl Consultants, an offshoot of Etteh Aro & Partners and has to his credit over 200 exciting engineering projects.  To him, engineering is a medium to express himself.  He brings creativity and art to engineering designs, giving them not just functions but form like the ‘renaissance engineer’. Some fascinating landmark projects to his credit:

1.  27km long Port Harcourt Ring Road Design with the first Cable-Stayed Bridge (300m clear span & 60m vertical clearance) in Nigeria, Rivers State Government in Nigeria, 2008.

2.  East-West Coastal Road Design (Calabar – Lagos) straddling over 706km on the main and 106km of spurs with 180No. bridges including 3No. Iconic Bridges – Suspension Bridge over Bonny River Crossing, “WATER DIAMOND OF GRAND BONNY”; Cable-Stayed Bridge over Escravos River Crossing, “ESCRAVOS MARVEL”; and another Cable-Stayed Bridge over Forcados River Crossing, “WONDROUS FORCADOS”. This project was described internationally as one of the most ambitious and sophisticated highway engineering designs in the World.

The pedestal of Maynes engineering practice was built by Rev. (Engr). E. I. Etteh and late           Engr. Lawrence Arokodare. Their contribution is humbly recognized here as always while the glory is given to God.

Mayne is married to the amiable and equally erudite Juliet Ogedi David-West nee Nzeribe. Their over thirty-six (36) years old union is blessed with four children: Sylvia, Juliet, Tavis and Brian.
