Born on 10th January, 1955 in Okrika, River State. Prof. Joseph Atubokiki Ajienka had his primary education at Okrika Boys’ School Okrika, River State in 1960-1968. He received his secondary education at Government Comprehensive Secondary School, Borokiri, Port Harcourt, River State where he obtained West Africa School Certificate with Division One in 1969-1973. He attended University of Ibadan, 1976-1980 where he graduated with B.Sc degree in Petroleum Engineering. He later proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt for his M.Eng in Petroleum Engineering in 1984 and 1985, and Ph.D in Petroleum Engineering at the same University in 1986 and 1990 respectively.
Prof. Ajienka did his National Youth Service Corps in Port Harcourt at the department Production Testing Division of the Otis of Nigeria Limited in 1980/1981service year. In 1982-1992, he served as Petroleum Engineer II at the department of Oil and Gas in River State Government. Between 1992-1995, he was Senior Petroleum Technologist with Shell Petroleum Development Company in Eastern Division Port Harcourt on study leave. Prof. Ajienka joined the teaching staff of University of Port Harcourt as a graduate assistant, Department of Petroleum Engineering in 1982 and was promoted to the post of Assistant Lecturer, and gradually rose up the ladder until he became Professor at University of Port Harcourt. He had held strategic position at various time in the University: Director of Institute of Petroleum Studies, and head of Department of Petroleum Engineering. He has being a visiting Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the Abubarkar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State, Petroleum Training Institute, Warri, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology, Owerri and University of Ibadan respectively. Presently, Prof. Ajienka is the Vice Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt. He has research successfully in the area of production optimization, waxy crude oil production/handling, petroleum production economics, formation damage assessment and control, well stimulation, multiphase flow metring and production testing. He has received the SPE African Regional Award of Excellence, Nigerian Petroleum Golden Jubilee Award of Excellence, Who is Who in 50 years of Oil & Gas, University of Port Harcourt Alumni Award of Excellence, IPS 5th Year Award of Excellence, American Medal of Honour and listed Who is Who 2003,ABI. Prof. Ajienka has written many books and has published in several journals.
He is a COREN Registered Engineer, Fellow, Nigerian Environmental Society, Nigerian Institute of Management, Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals, Institute of Petroleum Studies and Institute of Industrial Administration.
