ENGR. PROF. O. A. BAMIRO
Born on 16th September 1947 in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State. Prof. Olufemi Adebisi Bamiro had his secondary school education at Molusi College, Ijebu-lgbo, passing out in Grade 1 in the West African School Certificate (WASC), Ordinary Level in 1965. He proceeded to Government College, Ibadan for his Higher School Certificate (HSC) and passed out with a result adjudged to be the best in the country that year at the Cambridge Higher School Certificate (Advanced Level), 1967. He thereafter proceeded as Shell Scholar to the Nottingham University, Nottingham, England for his first degree graduating with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering, 1971. He worked briefly for Shell-BP in Nigeria as pipeline engineer before proceeding to McGill University, Montreal, Canada on Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship where he obtained PhD degree in 1972.
Prof. Bamiro started his career with University of Ibadan in 1975 as Lecturer Grade I in the then Department of Design and Production Engineering. He was promoted Senior Lecturer in 1978, Reader in 1981 and the first Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1983. Professor Bamiro has close to 60 Publications in Learned Journals and refereed Proceedings on Micromechanics, Solid Mechanics, Energy, Science and Technology Policy and Entrepreneurship.
He has served as Consultant to several companies in both the private and public sectors of the Nation’s economy as well as International Agencies. He is a recognized expert in Science and Technology Policy issues, Entrepreneurship Studies, and Information Technology. He served University of Ibadan in various capacities, which include: Sub-Dean (General), Faculty of Technology (1977-1979); Sub-Dean (Postgraduate), 1982-1983; Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering (1983-1985); Dean, Faculty of Technology; Chairman of the Task Force that designed and successfully implemented the water Supply Scheme for the University of Ibadan; Director, University of Ibadan Management Information System (MIS) Unit; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) (2004-2005); and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan from December 1, 2005 to November 30, 2010, a period of five years. He is an author of several books in Introductory Technology, Solid Mechanics for Engineers, and Entrepreneurship.
Prof. Bamiro has served the Nation and the Engineering Bodies in several capacities including: Member of the National Energy Panel (1984); Member of the Implementation Committee of the National Science and Technology Policy (NSTP). (1987); Member of the Permanent Site Development Committee of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. (1988); Member of the Governing Council, Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta; Head of the Nigerian Delegation of the Scientists that visited Iran from August 14?28, 1990 in respect of Memorandum of Understanding in Science and Technology between Nigeria and the Islamic Republic of Iran; Member of the Planning Committee and the Chief Rapporteur of the first Technology Summit by NSE held in 1997 and others
He received Academic Session by the Association of Mechanical Engineering Students Award in 1999, the Nigerian Society of Engineers Merit Award and United Nations Human Settlement (UN-Habitat) Best Practice Award in respect of the Organo-Mineral Fertiliser Plant Design and Construction Project.
He is a Fellow, the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), and the Nigerian Solar Energy Society (FSESN).
