Engr. Andrew Laah Yakubu is the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation; as the GMD of NNPC, he amongst others responsibilities manages the interests and investments of the Government in the Nigerian Oil & Gas Oil industry. He has played a significant role in the development of the industry.
Many institutions, corporate establishments, academics and students have benefited immensely from his wealth of experience in the Oil & Gas industry; he is a well-grounded engineer, highly experienced corporate administrator, an accomplished achiever and a Philanthropist.
Andrew was born in September 1955 in Zonzon Kataf, Kaduna State; in 1979 he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
He started his professional career with NNPC as a Plant Operator at the Kaduna Refinery in 1980 and has a vast working career that traverses several directorates; he handled various managerial positions across the value chain of the hydrocarbon industry, which prepared him for his current appointment as GMD in June 2012.
Prior to this appointment, Engr. Yakubu was the Group Executive Director, Exploration & Production; Managing Director, Warri Refinery & Petrochemicals Company Limited; Executive Director Operations, Nigerian Gas Company and National Engineering and Technical Company Limited (NETCO). He was also Manager Engineering & Facilities and Manager Project Coordination in NAPIMS – the upstream sector of the industry for nearly a decade where he managed various successful projects including Escravos Gas Project, Bonny Terminal Integrated Project, Gbaran Ubie Oil and Gas Project and many others.
A highly active man, Engr. Yakubu belongs to several clubs, societies and professional organizations. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers; Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers; a Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering; Associate Fellow, Chemical Society of Nigeria and a registered Engineer of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria COREN.
He strongly believes in improving the quality of lives of his associates and his community. Over the years he has continued to support the activities of many institutions and organizations through charitable donations, sponsorships and scholarships. Besides professional organizations, some of the beneficiaries of his generosity include individual students, students’ bodies, orphans, aged women, mothers, widows, churches, and several other groups.
In recognition of his contribution towards the advancement of the field of engineering and the Oil & Gas industry, Engr. Andrew Laah Yakubu has received several commendations, awards and honours. He was granted the Presidential Merit Award by the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers in 1997 for actualizing the Escravos Gas Project; the GMD of NNPC Award in 1987 for outstanding performance; commendations from the GMD of NNPC in 1995 for excellent performance in Chief Officer’s Management Development program and several others.
Recognition of his contributions to community developments, in 2004 he was honoured with a chieftaincy title: “Iyan Atyap” by the Atyap Kingdom of Kaduna State and he is a full member of the Iyan Council of Chiefs. Recognition of his contributions to the larger society and humanity Engr. Yakubu has received other chieftaincy titles namely the Okaa Obuluzo of Obosi land and the Nwachinemere 1 of Uruata Kingdom of Abia State amongst others.
He is happily married to Sarah Yakubu with whom he has six (6) children and three (3) grandchildren. He has a strong interest in the games of Golf and Soccer.
