Born on 7th September, 1941 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Professor Timothy Akanbi Ibidapo Akeju attended St. Paul’s College, Zaria (1947-61) and Kings College, Lagos (1962-63). He was a state scholar at the University of Lagos (1964-67) from where he graduated in 1967 with a First Class Honours (B.Sc.) Degree in Civil Engineering, winning the Vice-Chancellors Prize for the best overall performance.
Following postgraduate studies in Imperial College, London (1968-71), he received a D.I.C. (Concrete Structures) and Ph.D (Structural Mechanics) in 1972. He initially worked at G. Maunsell & Partners, London and Shell Nigeria Limited before he joined the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos, in 1973 as a lecturer in Civil Engineering. He became a Professor in 1983.
Professor Akeju has contributed extensively and has numerous publications in the area of Structural mechanics, particularly Analytical and Numerical Solutions of Thin Shell Problems and Structural Optimization as well as Nigerian building materials and construction technology.
Internationally, he served on the Management Committee of the ANSTI for many years and received fellowship of the IUC, The Royal Society and the UNESCO at various times. He has been active in the field of education, serving as Head of Department of Civil Engineering, UNILAG, member of various accreditation boards, as well as being voted as a role model by students.
He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Nigerian Academy of Science and the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.
