Senator Engr. Dr. Gobir, born on 1st January 1953, graduated from the Ohio Institute of Technology, USA with BSc. in electronics engineering in 1979, from the University of Detroit in Michigan USA with M.Eng. (the highest honors) in Electrical engineering in 1984 and from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi with Ph.D. in 2004. He received MBA (Finance and Accounts) from the University of Liverpool in 2012.
Engr. Gobir joined the services of the Cement Company of Northern Nigeria plc in 1987 as a senior Electrical Engineer and went through the ranks to become the General Manager Operations, the Technical Head, and in 1999, the Managing Director/CEO of the Cement Company. After retiring, he was appointed the Chairman of the Company in 2006. He also became the executive Chairman of another cement company, Damnaz Cement Company Limited in 2008.
Dr. Gobir was a Director or a Chairman of several other Companies and Organizations including Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Sokoto Building materials and Construction Company.
Dr. Gobir is a registered Electrical Engineer with COREN, and a Chartered Electrical Engineer (C.Eng.), UK. He is a Fellow of Professional Bodies such as the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, UK, the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria and the Nigerian Institute of Management.
He is a two times recipient of the Presidential Nigerian Society of Engineers merit awards. In 2002, he received the prestigious National Honour of MFR. He has been in the Senate since 2011.
