ENGR. PROF. DANIEL OBIKWELU

 

Daniel was born at Ogidi in Anambra State of Nigeria where he had his primary education. He had his secondary and higher school certificate education at Bishop Lasbrey College, Owerri and Federal Emergency Science School, Lagos respectively. He then gained direct entry admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and graduated in 1975 with 2nd class upper division. From there, he pursued a Master’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering at the Wayne State University, College of Engineering, Detroit, Michigan, USA and was the best graduate in the College of Engineering.

He proceeded to do a Ph.D. Metallurgy at the Michigan State University, E. Lansing, USA using the American Naval Fellowship and graduated in 1982. Daniel was a Federal Government of Nigeria Scholar from 1966-1970 and 1976-1981. Daniel has unusual work experience. He was a Teaching/Research Assistant in various American Universities from 1977-1982. He has worked as Assistant Chief Engineer and Chief Engineer (Iron and Steel)/ Manager, Research and Quality Control at Delta Steel Company from 1984-1995. He was a lecturer in the SHELL Intensive Graduate Training Programme and the Coordinator of workshop practice in the Oil and Gas Operations from 2000-2010.

Dr. Obikwelu was a Lecturer I at Anambra State University of Science and Technology, Awka from 183-1984. He was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the University of Nigeria between 1997-2006. He was the pioneer and foundation Head/Professor of, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 2007 to 2010.

Prof. Obikwelu is an erudite scholar. He has published four textbooks and three chapters in a textbook. He has been editor to learned Conference Proceedings. He has over 30 high-level Journal publications, 9 conference proceedings and 3 technical reports. Engr. Prof. D.O.N. Obikwelu is a COREN registered engineer (R.4002). He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Metallurgical Society (1989) and a meritorious Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (2002). He is an awardee of the Professional Award of Excellence, Metallurgical, Mining and Materials (MMM) Division of NSE (2008) and a Fellow of African Scientific Society, FASI (2014).

Engr. Prof. Obikwelu is the immediate past National Chairman, the Institution of Metallurgical, Mining and Materials Engineers, The Nigerian Society of Engineers, 2017-2019. D.O.N. Obikwelu has arrays of personal achievements in engineering which include the following: He has professional certification in nanoscience and technology by Stanford University, 2006.

He was elected full member of an apex Research Society in America. The Sigma Xi Scientific Honour Society of America. He was adjudged by the College of Fellow, NSE as the best Fellow of the year 2002/2003. He was a member (Specifications of standard for Steels), Standard Committee of Standard Organization of Nigeria between 1983 – 2005. From Sigma Xi's membership, Prof. Obikwelu came to the limelight of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and was appointed one of the international judges for the Competition of Gifted Engineering Students. Engr. Prof. D.O.N. Obikwelu is happily married with children and grandchildren.
