Engr. (Dr.) Daniel Babasehinde Ayo was born on the 3rd of May, 1956 in Nigeria. He obtained a BSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Lagos in 1978 and 1985 respectively.
He started his career with the Lagos State Polytechnic in 1984 and in 1989 he joined the services of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council. (RMRDC), Lagos where he rose to the position of Director in 1995. He was the arrow head of a number of industrial projects in the organization. These include Castor Oil processing plant; Kaolin plant; Beniseed processing plant; Kilishi (dried meat) and Fish processing plants; Shea Butter processing plant; Cassava Flour plant; and Essential Oil plant. He later served briefly as the Acting Director General of the organization. He championed the rigorous adoption of Chemical Engineering Design principles in the establishment of process plants. This effort resulted in the emergence of a National Foundation for Process Equipment Design and Development, on whose board he serves as a trustee along with others from Industry, NSE, and NSChE.
Engr. (Dr.) Ayo has served in other capacities at national level. These include: Membership of Presidential Task force for Assessment of the Activities and Financial needs of the Nigerian Machine Tools, Oshogbo, Nigeria (1992); as Director, National Science and Technology Data Bank, a fore runner of the present day National Information and Technology Development Agency (1997-2002); member National Implementation Team for the Ban of Exportation of Raw Cocoa Beans (1990); Team Leader - National Committee for the Assessment of Y2k (Millennium Bug) compliance of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC and Nigerian Telecommunications Commission, NITEL (1999); and National Committee on Engineering Infrastructure; and the National Technical Working Groups of Vision 2020 -Technology and Innovation Thematic Area. (2009).
Between 2005 and 2006 he served as Nigeria's representative on the Governing Council of Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing countries (NAM S& T Centre), Headquartered in India.
He also served Engineering societies in Nigeria in various capacities, including membership of Technology Advancement and Promotional Group of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (2004-2007), and Chairmanship of the Professional Affairs Committee of NSChE (2012-2014),. He served as an Associate Examiner (Chemical/Petroleum Engineering) for the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria in 2020
Engr. (Dr.) Ayo left the services of Raw materials Research and Development Council, Abuja in 2013 to teach and share his wealth of experience with students and staff in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Lagos. He also served as the pioneer Head of the Research and Innovation Office in the University.
Dr. Ayo, a registered Engineer and registered Computer Professional, lives in Abuja with his wife and two children. His hobbies include computer programming, creative writing, guitar, piano, saxophone, painting and basketball.
