Engr. Chris Okoye was born in Jos on December 21st, 1951. He began his primary school at Christ Church School in Enugu and later proceeded to Colliery Comprehensive Technical Secondary School, Enugu for his secondary education. Following a brief spell FGN Okoye construction company as a site clerk, he proceeded to University of Wisconsin, Madison for his Bachelor of Science honors degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1976 and an M.Sc in Civil Engineering, specializing in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Houston.
His professional career has been equally distinguished, beginning as a graduate Research/Teaching assistant at the University of Houston, then transitioning to a Consultant Engineering role with the international firm of Harding-Lawson Associates, where he spearheaded several ground-breaking projects, including executing preliminary investigations at the site of the Bonny/LNG gas installation in Minna.
Subsequently, he married his international experience and expertise with local nous to forge a 25-year career in the Nigerian Construction industry, marked by numerous illustrious milestones such as the reconstruction of the Enugu-Onitsha old road. He returned to Consultant Engineering as the Chairman/Principal Consultant at Crown Crest Global Engineers Ltd, specializing in civil, geotechnical, and other forms of engineering.
His commitment to the Engineering profession as a “major driver of national development and international competitiveness” is underscored by his membership/fellowship of multiple professional bodies, including the: Nigerian Society of Engineers, Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, Nigerian Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers, Institute of Management Consultants-Nigeria, Fellow of the institute of Technicians of Nigeria, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Engr Okoye contributed to the development of the institutional and legal framework for the establishment of the National Transport Commission-the regulatory body for the transportation Sector, and being a key initiator/motivator in the development and approval of the National Road Fund and the Federal Road Authority— institutions that will revolutionize the Highway Sector in Nigeria, to shepherding the trial wedge method for computing pressures in stratified soils, advancing the re-creation of Engineering education for sustainability, overseeing the development of the institutional and legal framework for the establishment of the Nigerian Railway Authority, and the Rehabilitation and refurbishment of Akanu Ibiam International Airport Runway and other associated projects. Moreover, he has authored/co-authored and presented numerous influential papers in esteemed industry journals, conferences, and international fora.
Engr Okoye is the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman, Governing Council of Paul University, Awka, Chairman of the: Planning and Strategy Committee, Ohanaeze Anambra State, South East Nigeria Economic Commission (SENEC), and Centre for Entrepreneurship & Development Research University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
His life’s ethos of subverting individual interests for the collective good, an ideal essential to unlocking the catalytic power of engineering, has been captured in a soon to be published book titled “In Brotherhood We Stand.”
Chris Okoye is happily married to Professor Ifeoma Okoye of the Department of Radiation Medicine, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu and they are blessed with four children-two boys and two girls.
