Engr. Dr Josephat K. Okoye was born January 12, 1941 into Okwuanyionu family, Enugu Iwa Village, Obeledu, Anaocha LGA, Anambra State, Nigeria.
Engr. Dr. Okoye attended St. Paul’s Obeledu and St. Andrew’s Adazi Nnukwu Primary Schools both in Anaocha L.G.A., and C.I.C. Enugu and C.K.C. Onitsha (Higher School) graduating in both as best in class.
He earned a BSc in Engineering (First Class Honours) from Purdue University, USA (in 1965), and MSc (1966), and Ph.D. (1970) from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Engr. Okoye is a Fellow, of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, immediate past President and Vice President, the Nigerian Committee on Large Dams (NICOLD), Corporate Member, Nigeria Society of Engineers, Corporate Member, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, Registered Professional Engineer, California USA, and Member, American Society of Engineers, ASCE.
Engr. Dr. Okoye founded in 1980 and controlled to date, Water & Dam Services Company, (WADSCO), an Engineering consulting firm. He was Director and Associate, GF Appio & Associates Consulting Engineers, Lagos, Principal Engineer, Water Resources Engineering Consultants, California, Camp, Dresser and McKee Inc., Boston, Mass; Senior Staff and Principal Engineer, Leeds, Hill & Jewett, Inc., Consulting Engineers, San Francisco, and Staff Engineer, Bechtel Corporation, Los Angeles, California. Over his professional career which commenced in 1970.
Engr. Dr. Okoye has provided a wide range of engineering services as Project Director or Manager on over 100 major Water Resources Projects. These services include: Feasibility Studies, Evaluation, Design and Construction Management of numerous projects including Dams, Hydroelectric, Water Resources, Irrigation, Inter-basin Water Transfer, Water Supply, and Water Conveyance Systems. Prominent among these projects are the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project, Gurara Inter-basin Water Transfer Project - FCT, Kontagora Dam Project, World Bank-sponsored Purari Hydroelectric Project, Papua New Guinea, Portage Mountain Underground Power Project, Canada, Henshaw Dam, California and Cross Town Waste Water Interceptor, Austin Texas.
Engr. Dr. Okoye has received academic and professional awards and recognitions including Purdue University President's Honour award, Tau Beta Pi Scholastic membership award, Special recognition on Portage Mountain underground Hydro Powerhouse, Special commendations on the Alaska Pipeline Geomorphological Investigation etc.
In addition to his training, supervision and control of over 200 Engineers and allied professionals on more than 120 projects in the past 50 years, Dr. Okoye has presented numerous technical papers. A sample of technical papers presented by Dr. Okoye is as follows: Dams Development And Flood Control In A Climate Changing Environment – 2014: Impact of Lake Nyos simulated dam break on the Environment. A paper presented at the National Symposium of Nigeria Committee on Large Dams (NICOLD). Engr. Dr. Okoye is married and blessed with two sons and five grandchildren.
