Engr. Gumel started his distinguished professional career in 1977 as a General Manager at Bauchi State Co-operatives Building Association Limited. He became the Chief Civil Engineer and later the Director of Engineering in Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme between 1983 and 1985. During his distinguished working career in this World Bank Development Programme, he had accomplished wide ranging projects in roads construction, water supply and sanitation covering over 5,000 communities and villages in Bauchi State. His unquestionable professional competence earned him appointment as the Deputy General Manager (Operations) in the Federal Housing Authority, Lagos and quickly rose to the rank of Executive Director (Operations) in the same establishment between 1993 and 1999. His accomplishments in the area of provision of mass housing in Nigeria are unparalleled. It is to his outstanding professional credit that the Federal Housing Authority conceptualized, designed and implemented in 1994/95 National Mass Housing Programme which saw the construction and commissioning of over 10,000 housing units in the Federal Capital, Abuja and elsewhere in the Federation. This pioneering programme in concept and delivery has recorded phenomenal success and has remained a lasting national legacy. He had served and continues to serve as Chair and Member on many Boards of Public and Private Enterprises in Nigeria. For close to a decade until November, 2009, Engr. Habu Gumel was Director of Facilities and Stadia Development under the National Sports Commission; Federal Ministry of Sports. He is currently the Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund.
Engr. Habu Gumel has contributed immensely to the development of Engineering in Nigeria. He is a strong advocate and promoter of sound Engineering regulation, control and practice which he excellently demonstrated whilst serving at various times, as President, Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN), and President, Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) between 1998 and 2001. His professional expertise in the design and implementation of wide-ranging infrastructural projects under the National Lottery Trust Fund is not in doubt and his effective contributions as Vice-Chairman, Railway Infrastructural in the Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P) of the current administration has continued to confirm his excellent track record of professionalism and leadership in Civil and Structural Engineering practice in Nigeria.
At the global stage, Engr. Habu Gumel is highly respected and recognised sports administrator and consultant. He is currently representing Nigeria on the apex sporting body, the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He has been involved in developing wide-ranging engineering consultancy projects for International sporting organizations like the IOC, Federation of International Volleyball Association, etc.
In recognition of his meritorious services to the nation and international community, Engr. Habu Gumel was awarded the distinguished National honour of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in2001. He was also honoured with the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) of the Commonwealth University, Belize in July, 2011 for his contributions to education. He holds the Fellowships of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Nigerian Institute of management (NIM).
